Satellite data reveal unprecedented browning of European countryside as heatwave and drought grip continent

Copernicus Sentinel‑2 satellite observations have documented a striking transformation of Europe’s rural landscapes between May and July 2026. Areas that were once dark green turned a pale, almost caramel hue within a two‑month span, a change that the study quantifies using a specific range of earth‑tone values to define “brown” pixels.
Scale of the browning
When July 2026 was compared with the 2018‑2025 average, the proportion of brown pixels rose across the continent. In that month, roughly 75 % of the monitored land was browner than the July average of the preceding eight years. France alone accounted for more than half of the fifty European regions that exhibited the greatest colour shift between May and July.
In the Eure‑et‑Loir area of northern France, the landscape colour changed from deep green to a light caramel tone within sixty days. Excluding the Nordic states, eleven of twelve French mainland regions recorded at least a ten‑point increase in brown land cover. Along the Loire, brown land cover jumped from 34 % to 70 % while green cover fell from 41 % to 9 %.
Heat, drought and water stress
June 2026 saw the highest temperature ever recorded in Western Europe, and the month was marked by rainfall far below long‑term averages in France, Spain and Portugal. The European Environment Agency’s WISE Freshwater database flagged drought conditions in 37 of the 38 countries it monitors, affecting about 22 % of Europe’s land area.
By mid‑June, water‑use restrictions were imposed in almost all French departments. France also endured three consecutive heatwaves, while major rivers such as the Loire fell to flow levels not seen in the past thirty years.
Human and economic impact
Preliminary health figures suggest the current heatwave may have caused around 20 000 excess deaths across Europe. Spain reported 22 major wildfires during the year, including a blaze in Almería that claimed 13 lives.
The European Commission estimates that droughts cost the EU between €2 billion and €9 billion each year.
Policy response and debate
Union representatives are calling for stronger drought‑resilience measures, including water‑saving irrigation, stricter water‑abstraction regulation and greater support for farmers. Industry groups warn that excessive regulation could undermine EU competitiveness.
Policymakers now face pressure to translate the satellite evidence into concrete policy changes, with revisions to the Common Agricultural Policy and the European Climate Law under discussion.
